US Precious Metals Direct: Shandong Gold ADR Leads Asian Precious Metals Sector
At 9:30 PM Beijing time on July 30, during US pre-market trading, Shandong Gold (ticker: SDG) ADR continued its Asian session strength, rising 3.2% to $15.68, with volume reaching $12 million. The rally was driven by the company's better-than-expected Q2 production and international gold prices breaking key resistance.
Strong Production Data: 12% YoY Growth in Q2
According to the operating report released by Shandong Gold today, the company produced 10.5 tons of mined gold in Q2 2026, up 8% QoQ and 12% YoY, exceeding management's guidance range of 9.5-10 tons. The growth mainly came from technical upgrades and expansion projects at its Jiaojia and Sanshandao gold mines, as well as the first-time consolidated revenue from the overseas Barrick Nevada project. H1 cumulative production reached 19.8 tons, completing 48% of the annual plan, leaving ample room for the peak season in H2.
Analysts noted that Shandong Gold also performed well in cost control, with Q2 all-in sustaining costs (AISC) of approximately $920/oz, down $30/oz from the same period last year, further expanding profit margins per ounce at current gold prices. Costs are expected to continue optimizing in H2 as the proportion of high-grade ore extraction increases.
Gold Price Breaks $1980: Dual Drivers of Weak Dollar and Rate Expectations
Meanwhile, international gold prices rallied sharply from late Asian to early European sessions. Spot gold hit $1985.30/oz, a new high since November 2024. Key factors driving the upside: First, the US dollar index DXY fell below the 100 mark to 99.8, a one-year low, as US June retail sales missed expectations and the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow model lowered Q3 GDP growth forecast from 2.1% to 1.8%, raising concerns about the US economic outlook. Second, the CME FedWatch tool shows the probability of maintaining rates in September has risen to 68%, with rate cut expectations up 15 percentage points from a week ago, lowering real interest rates and boosting the appeal of zero-yield assets.
Additionally, geopolitical risk premiums have rebounded. Tensions in the Middle East have escalated, with military clashes between Iran and Israel in Syria intensifying, driving capital flows into gold as a safe haven. The world's largest gold ETF, SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), saw cumulative net inflows of 8.2 tons in the first four trading days of this week, indicating increased institutional allocation appetite.
Asian Precious Metals Sector Follows: Zijin Mining, Zhaojin Mining Active Pre-Market
Driven by Shandong Gold, multiple Chinese gold mining ADRs listed in the US strengthened in pre-market. Zijin Mining (ZIJMY) rose 1.8% to $5.44, and Zhaojin Mining (JINFF) rose 2.1% to $1.96. Among regional ADRs, the South Korean precious metals ETF KTHN rose 1.6%, and Japan's precious metals index climbed 2.3%. Trading volume was 30% higher than the same period the previous day, with clear signs of capital rotation from tech stocks to gold assets.
At the industry level, the World Gold Council's latest report shows global gold mine production fell 1.2% YoY in Q2 2026, while Shandong Gold's counter-trend growth further highlights its capacity advantage. Shandong Gold's current forward P/E ratio is only 18.5x, below its five-year average of 21x and also below competitors Newmont (NEM) at 22x and Barrick Gold (GOLD) at 24x, making valuations attractive. Several investment banks raised target prices in pre-market research notes, with Goldman Sachs lifting its 12-month target from $18 to $20 and maintaining a Buy rating.
Outlook: Gold Price May Challenge $2000 Psychological Level
Looking ahead to H2, the Fed's policy path remains the key variable dominating precious metals markets. If US economic data continues to weaken, market rate cut expectations will strengthen further, and gold could challenge the $2000 mark. At the same, the global central bank gold-buying trend continues, with the People's Bank of China increasing its reserves for 18 consecutive months, reaching 2,350 tons at end-June, providing long-term support for gold prices. For Chinese mining companies like Shandong Gold, rising gold prices combined with production expansion create significant earnings elasticity.
On the risk side, investors should be alert to short-term correction pressure. Current gold RSI has entered overbought territory (68), and COMEX gold net long positions have risen to near two-year highs, which could trigger profit-taking in crowded trades. However, from a medium-to-long-term perspective, gold remains a strategically important asset allocation component.
